THE UNIVERSAL REFORMER

Marc Blumenthal from Portsmouth, NH demonstrates some exercises on the reformer. In the front of the device note there are four spring attachments. These adjust the amount of resistance on the ropes and on the sliding carriage that Marc is sitting on.
Pati Kuziomko is a certified Pilates instructor residing in Newcastle, NH. Pati is giving Marc a private lesson on the reformer. The routine lasts about 90 minutes and is a total body conditioning program.
Several of the mat exercises transfer on to the reformer. This exercise is called a "Rolldown" and is also done as part of the matwork. Notice that the ropes are also used on the feet as well as on the hands. The ropes provide some resistance but the indivividual still needs to strictly concentrate to control the movement.
The reformer can be used with the body placed in several different positions depending on the muscles that the exercise is focusing on. Marc is using his legs to press the carriage back while holding onto the front rail. This is done while paying strict attention to keeping the spine and pelvis and the whole powerhouse in precise alignment.
Pati is giving Marc instructions on how to keep his powerhouse - the abdominals and the muscles running up and down the spine - in correct alignment to safely perform the exercise.
Marc has been doing exercises on the reformer with Pati for about a year. He feels that Pilates trains you "from the inside out." Marc claims that he feels more "centered," has better posture, and Pilates training has helped him with some skeletal alignment issues he has had in the past.
Proper instruction is key to performing the exercises correctly. Pati has been involved in movement instruction for 25 years, is a Certified Personal Trainer as well as a certified Stott Pilates instructor, and a health/wellness educator.
Marc also agrees that Pilates is a great complement to his regular fitness routine. He also does weight lifting, yoga, and jogging in addition to his trainings on the reformer with Pati.
